Benesch is pleased to announce that Martha J. Sweterlitsch has been presented with the "2010 Outstanding Lawyer Award" by the American Bar Association's Non-profit Organizations Committee.
The "Outstanding Lawyer Award" is presented annually for distinguished service by an attorney practicing non-profit law. The American Bar Association, the largest voluntary professional association in the world, selects an accomplished and civic-minded lawyer from its membership of 400,000 lawyers as the recipient of this national award.
Ms. Sweterlitsch is Of Counsel with Benesch's Health Care Practice Group and leads the firm's Non-profit Initiative. Her practice focuses on non-profit, administrative, health, state tax, and federal and state tax exemption law and lobbying. Significant areas of her practice include creation, reorganization, mergers and consolidations and ongoing advice to not-for-profit corporations, state and federal tax and tax exemption for not for profit organizations, and legal issues related to charitable solicitation and fundraising.
Ms. Sweterlitsch has been involved over many years with legislative initiatives affecting the regulation, operation and taxation of not-for-profit entities, including changes to the charitable solicitation laws. She is currently Chair of the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations and has represented its member organizations in negotiations related to matters of public funds contracting and accountability. Ms. Sweterlitsch also serves as a trustee for the Ohio United Way and as legislative counsel for the Ohio Alliance of YMCA’s, the Ohio Association of Child Care Providers, the Association of Ohio Philanthropic Homes and Housing For Aging, and several other non profit organizations.
Ms. Sweterlitsch received her J.D. from The Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law in 1983 and her B.A. from The Ohio State University in 1967.
