Benesch is pleased to announce that Stephen D. Scanlon has joined the firm as partner and Elizabeth A. Batts, Michael J. Mozes, Andrew J. Poltorak, Gaetano G. Savelli and Michael P. Sherban have joined as associates.
Stephen D. Scanlon joins Benesch as a partner in the Innovations, Information Technology & Intellectual Property (3iP) Practice Group. He will work out of the Cleveland, OH office. Mr. Scanlon advises clients on all phases of patent preparation, prosecution and appeals on a global basis and represents their interests before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Scanlon also helps clients manage their IP assets, counseling them on portfolio development, assisting with IP audits, conducting patent searches and issuing opinions on infringement, validity and patentability. Mr. Scanlon received his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1985 and his B.S. from SUNY Buffalo in 1980.
Elizabeth A. Batts joins Benesch as an associate in the Litigation Practice Group. She will work out of the Cleveland, OH office. Ms. Batts litigates a broad range of intellectual property matters, including patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright, and domain name disputes. She also has experience litigating against patent assertion entities (“PAEs”), both as an in-house attorney and as outside counsel. She is well-versed in their litigation strategy and tactics, and she pursues creative ways to minimize the costs associated with litigating against PAEs. Ms. Batts received her J.D. from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 2008 and her B.S. from the University of Cincinnati in 2005.
Michael J. Mozes joins Benesch as an associate in the Corporate & Securities Practice Group. He will work out of the Columbus, OH office. Mr. Mozes counsels private equity and venture capital funds in connection with their investments in portfolio companies, advises investment managers in relation to fund formation and federal and state regulatory compliance, and assists pension plans, endowments, and high net worth clients with investments in all types of alternative investment vehicles. In addition, Mr. Mozes assists companies in all stages of growth in a variety of transactional matters, including entity structure, formation, corporate governance, financing transactions, and mergers and acquisitions. He received his J.D. from Harvard University Law School in 2011 and his Master of Accounting and BSBA in Accounting from The Ohio State University, Fisher College of Business in 2008.
Andrew J. Poltorak joins Benesch as an associate in the Litigation Practice Group. He will work out of the Cleveland, OH office. Mr. Poltorak represents publicly traded companies and private businesses in state and federal jurisdictions. He is experienced in resolving disputes involving breach of contract, general commercial torts, trade secrets, insurance, construction, and real estate matters. Mr. Poltorak utilizes a project management approach to efficiently handle various aspects of complex litigation matters from initial pleadings through case resolution. Mr. Poltorak received his J.D. from Elon University School of Law in 2012 and his B.S. from Clemson University in 2005.
Gaetano G. Savelli is an associate in Benesch’s Commercial Finance & Banking Practice Group. He will work out of the Cleveland, OH office. His practice focuses on representing banks, other financial institutions, and borrowers in secured and unsecured lending transactions; structuring, documenting and negotiating various types of loan transactions, including asset-based transactions, health care transactions, subordinated debt placements, letters of credit and bond financings, syndications, venture capital transactions and other leveraged buyout transactions; loans sales, loan maintenance and modifications, loan restructurings and loan workouts. Mr. Savelli received his J.D. from the Cleveland State University, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 2007 and his B.A. from Cleveland State University in 2003.
Michael P. Sherban joins Benesch as an associate in the Innovations, Information Technology & Intellectual Property (3iP) Practice Group. He will work out of the Cleveland, OH office. Mr. Sherban's practice focuses on patent litigation. He also has experience with trademark litigation, copyright litigation, patent prosecution, and intellectual property licensing. Additionally, Mr. Sherban has experience with complex litigation and dispute resolution concerning contracts and other business transactions and relationships. Mr. Sherban received his J.D. from Cleveland State University, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, magna cum laude in 2005 and his B.S. for Manufacturing Engineering from Miami University in 1994.
