The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (“CVSA”) has announced that its 30th annual International Roadcheck will occur June 6-8, 2017. This year’s Roadcheck will place a particular emphasis on cargo securement safety. The CVSA anticipates that inspectors will be conducting approximately 17 Level I Inspections (the most comprehensive inspection – thoroughly checking the driver’s documentation and an extensive vehicle inspection) per minute during this 72 hour period in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Now is the time to ensure that your cargo securement safety policies and procedures track the FMCSA’s specifications and that these policies are being adhered to strictly. During last year’s roadside inspection blitz focusing on tire safety, 62,796 total inspections were conducted. Of those inspections, 42,236 were Level I inspections which resulted in 21.5 percent of the inspected vehicles and 3.4 percent of inspected drivers being placed out-of-service. In addition to ensuring your cargo safety securement policies are adequate and in place, now is the right time to complete full inspections on your company’s vehicles – whether owned or leased operating under your authority – and invest in any repairs you may have been putting off. (Be sure to keep the documentation of any repairs in good order for the inspectors.)
