Benesch, one of the fastest-growing AmLaw 200 law firms, has further expanded the core team in its New York office, welcoming partner Laura Mehl Sugarman to the firm’s Real Estate & Environmental Practice Group.
Laura represents national and local developers, owners, landlords, tenants, lenders, borrowers and investors in a wide range of real estate transactions. With expertise in handling complex real estate matters — including financing, acquisitions, dispositions, leasing, air rights and corporate structuring — Laura is positioned to provide sophisticated real estate advising to Benesch clients.
“The depth of Laura’s transactional experience, coupled with regulatory knowledge gained from her time in government, make her an outstanding addition to our growing team in New York,” said Benesch Firmwide Managing Partner Gregg A. Eisenberg. “She is a tremendous resource for clients navigating the complexities of structuring development deals in today’s dynamic environment.”
With a focus on condominium and cooperative development and management, Laura’s reach includes both national and international clients. In addition, she has experience at the intersection of not-for-profit law and real estate and has particular knowledge of the structuring and formation of leasehold condominiums. Laura has previously served in the office of the New York State Comptroller, the United States Attorneys’ Office, and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation Department. Laura earned her J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and her B.A. in Journalism and History from New York University.
This summer, Benesch expanded its footprint in New York City’s Midtown Business District with the addition of offices at 1155 Avenue of the Americas. With space to accommodate expansion, Benesch’s New York office aims to build on the momentum of the firm’s growth across multiple markets. Since launching its strategic national expansion in 2015, Benesch has been consistently ranked as one of the fastest-growing law firms in the country. This year alone, the firm has added 27 lawyers making lateral moves from some of the nation’s largest law firms.
