Building upon its commitment to growth on the West Coast, Benesch is pleased to welcome James Thompson as a partner in the firm’s Litigation Practice Group in San Francisco.
Jim has litigated numerous cases in state and federal court (and arbitration tribunals), including highly publicized securities, white collar, trade secret, insurance, and other commercial business disputes. He also routinely represents clients in internal investigations and regulatory matters, often dealing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Department of Justice, and Attorney Generals.

Jim’s track record of success at every stage of litigation, including motions to dismiss, summary judgment, and at trial is a result of his down to earth and hands on approach to every facet of his work. When he’s not litigating, Jim also serves as a trusted advisor for his clients, taking ownership of their problems and helping them find creative solutions, evaluate legal exposure, negotiate with third parties, etc. Jim’s client base spans across a variety of industries including in the technology, financial, energy, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors.
Jim graduated from the University of California, Davis School of Law and cum laude from the University of Washington with a B.A. in Finance/Information Technology.
He joins a litigation practice rapidly making a name for itself representing top-tier companies in high-profile matters. The team actively pursues cost-effective outcomes for multinational, publicly held and private companies, for-profit and non-profit boards and municipalities as well as other government lenders, insurers and individuals in alternative dispute resolution forums.
Jim is one of 20 new attorneys to join Benesch so far this year. Since making its debut on the AmLaw 200 list in 2016, Benesch has advanced 27 places and is currently ranked at number 168.
