Thomas focuses his practice on complex intellectual property litigation and transactions, with a particular focus on patent infringement and trademark cases across district courts, the International Trade Commission, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
He is experienced in various technical areas, including Internet technologies, wireless and cellular communications, semiconductor chip design and fabrication, power tools, computer and networking systems, and mechanical devices.
Additionally, Thomas advises on intellectual property aspects associated with strategic transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, global corporate reorganizations, and complex intellectual property license structures for public and privately held companies. He also provides analysis on landscape, freedom to operate, and patentability opinions, helping clients navigate domestic and international patent portfolios.
Prior to joining Benesch, Thomas was an associate at a large international law firm. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer. With a background in electrical engineering, he spent six years as an engineer at a leading standards organization, where he contributed to the development of industry standards in cybersecurity, cryptography, access control, and intrusion detection systems. He combines his hands-on industry experience with legal strategy to give clients robust and strategic counsel.
